Older electronics have left a void, an engineering slop so to speak to be filled with the need to over engineer other components for safety. Primitive engine control, fuel delivery and spark ignition as late as just a few years ago required engineers to over compensate. Heavier fuel robbing rods and pistons due to fluctuations in power output. Larger more efficient (read turbos with more lag) and lower compression to mitigate detonation, and an over abundance of injector to make sure adequate fueling would be available under all conditions especially those with forced induction as forced inductions engines typically have a higher BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) and lower air to fuel ratio than that of its naturally aspirated counterparts.
